I agree with the first poster. I know that I got the DWF composer in the first place becuase I was told that it had the ability to open DWG files, pan, measure and plot them only ot find out that the DWG viewer is only good for that and doesn't even measure. I have a call into my rep about this.

    You were misinfomed...
Next time, ask for a trial copy.

not that that's a bad idea, but, I think it might be more important to find a reseller who knows their product well enough not to misinform.

True. It would be nice if it was in plain english on the website though.

    It should read something like:

Lightbulb Re: the ability to measure

    Hi
Tricky one this. We produce DWG's but have non CAD people who need to extract info from drawings. They need to measure distance and area and that's about it. Yes, we can create DWF's but it's an extra output everytime and when a design is in progress, it's not always convenient to produce a DWF for internal use.
My feeling is DWF's are great as a view and print facility but maybe , and it's a big maybe, Autodesk should ditch Design Review and add extra functionality to DWG TrueView?
    What's your thoughts?

Or, hey, how 'bout just combining the two products? and/or letting full AutoCAD become a "viewer" (no save) if it can't find a license (or choose not to set one), similar to how other products work?

DWFs are fine as an alternative to printing submittals, or even check sets, for review, but when you want to just quickly check something on an in-progress set, it falls short.

It's a good thought. I suppose the argument against it would be that a client would have a DWG for viewing and measuring and could open it in AutoCAD and edit the drawing. This is where Design Review helps as it is a read only file. There's definitely room for some streamlining of DWF Viewer, Design Review and DWG TrueView and I really need a measure facility in DWG True View.
