Default Visual Studio 2005 "Express" versions

Microsoft has apparently launched an "Express" version of its Visual Studio 2005 which, if downloaded within a year from today, is free to use. It's obviously watered down, and the site says it's for hobbyists, but it'll be interesting to see if the Revit API will work with it once the API becomes compatible with VS 2005...

    Here is the announcement...

    Cheers

Can you use .NET 2.0 with NET 1.1 applications? If not then you can't use these express version with the Revit .NET API which is a 1.1 NET application. Hopefully we will get plenty of notice of Revit moving to NET 2.0.

Is this what you mean by becoming compatible?

You should be able to add a line to your app.config file to specify the 1.1 version of the .NET framework. This will allow you to develop with VS2005 using the older framework.

In VS, go to Project > Properties. On the Build tab, there's a Supported Runtimes section where you can change it.

    Hope that helps,

Oops, I guess you can't. From the FAQ:

Can I develop applications using the Visual Studio Express Editions to target the .NET Framework 1.1?

No, each release of Visual Studio is tied to a specific version of the .NET Framework. The Express Editions can only be used to create applications that run on the .NET Framework 2.0.
    Sorry for the confusion...

Yes, that's what I was referring to, although I'm not updated on .net and I won't be an expert on the matter until I take Danny's class at AU.

From this week's upFront.ezine, it seems that Autodesk has announced it's support for VS 2005 for AutoCAD, Inventor and "other software." Who knows when that "other software will include Revit. I would assume (or hope?) that Autodesk will support both platforms for programming.

Well, I hope they give us lots of warning. V9 is apparently getting close to beta status. So do we assume V9 will still be 1.1? Going by a few posts VS2005 is buggy, so you can't imagine the Revit developers jumping in at the deep end.

Hopefully someone from the factory can comment on NET2.0 support.

I wouldn't count on becoming an expert (at least not because of my class)!

How about enough knowledge to at least be dangerous?

    Can't wait for the class.
