    Unhappy Slow performance with 3D model drawing file in AutoCAD 2006

    Hi

    I have a new computer running AutoCAD 2006 and it is as slow as can be. I could use some help. The IT guy blames AutoCAD and I'm no IT guy.

    The AutoCAD drawing is 4.1 Meg in size. It is a 3D assembly of about 70 parts. No Xrefs!

    The speed problem seems to be in paper space with views/viewports that use SHADE>>HIDE. And when switching from paper space back to model space. It seems as if the drawing keeps regening and the cursor moves very slowly.

    The system is:
    Video Device: NVIDIA Quadro FX 1400
    Operating System: Windows XP
    Computer: DELL Workstation 380
    2.80 gigahertz Intel Pentium
    16 kilobytes primary memory cache
    1024 kilobytes secondary memory cache
    Memory: 2048 Megabytes

    Any buddy got any ideas?

    Thanks

    Hi

    You might want to take a look at the information found in the following thread...

    Drawing slows down, especially while selecting objects.

    Have a good one, Mike

    Thanks Mike and brettina, but I have already tried all the AutoCAD Bulletin solutions and there is no noticeable increase in speed.
    The IT guy sent the 4.1 Meg drawing file over to the AutoCAD reseller and he was told that AutoCAD can’t do what we want it to do. We should buy Inventor. This is not a good thing to say to a company that is thinking of changing to SolidWorks.
    The reseller did have one good idea. Seeing that the two sheet Paper Space layout has five VIEWs in it in which HIDE is on; turn HIDE off in the VIEWs not being worked on till you have to PLOT.
    Anybody have any ideas on performance? That drawing is running like a dog with no legs!

    Go to Task Manager, open Processes, and look to the that the rundll32.exe service isn't hung. If it's running, close all your programs, then go back to Task Manager and see if it's still running. If it is, give it a few minutes and see if it quits. If it doesn't, kill the process. The reopen AutoCAD and see how it runs.

    This may cure your problem - I hope it does. If it doesn't it's worth a shot.

    I've done it before when my AutoCAD starts acting up, and everything then works fine.

    Be well...

    Thanks Joe;

    I only have two Apps opened AutoCAD 2006 and Microsoft Outlook, but Randall32.EXR must have been doing something because now I'm a little bit faster. Still not there, but heading in the right direction.

    You could make the extra vports temporarily inactive; select the vport, select Properties and set "On" to "No".
    You might also want to look into the cacheing of tabs - it's on the system tab of the Options dialogue.
    A 4.1 Meg model is, itself, no problem. Oh, and change reseller.

    Hey John;
    I'll give your ideas a try. I can't do anything about the choice of AutoCAD reseller. I'm just a part time temp.
