Lightbulb Do not duplicate existing views - confusing newbies

    UI Enhancement (low hanging fruit):

When creating new views, remove the: "Do not duplicate existing views" checkbox and always create a new view from the level datum.

It just confuses everybody for very little added functionality. Ironically this was probably put in to help new users, thinking that the "View -> Floor Plan..." button was for navigation instead of creation.

The check mark was created to avoid creating duplicate views. Sometimes users want to select multiple levels using Click+Shift and make sure that there are views for all of them. In these situations users don't want to create a new view if one is already in existence and at the same time they also don't want to take responsibility of correctly selecting levels one by one.

I'd rather not see it gone, but perhaps it would make more sense if it was unchecked by default... ?

Do you mean that it is more typical for people to desire creation of duplicates?

I've always found this confusing in the way that it's worded - it's just not intuitive. It needs some further thought on how to word it better though...

I would rather "duplicate with detailing" only...

Yes. I'm aware that it was added to prevent unwanted duplication. But, follow this scenario:

    • Create new project, levels and bulk create initial views
    • Create new views to go on sheets.
    • Create working views
    • Create more views to go on sheets.
    • Create working views
    • Create more views to go on sheets.

See a pattern. We are continually creating new views during the process and only bulk creating them at project startup.

From my point of view, you don't fix poor UI design by creating a new feature. Just fix the UI to begin with.

Well, it sounds like product designers should confirm your assertion with a wider audience. If confirmed then switching default state of check mark may be a good idea. However one also needs to consider a flip side (i.e. potential impact of different default on users of different level of experience).

At the time designers thought that they there making a good choice. Nonetheless I am sure they appreciate a suggestion for further improvement especially if it is presented in a constructive and courteous manner.

I appreciate your response. Perhaps I did not explain this problem clearly enough, but for those of you who have lot's of production experience with Revit it should be an uncomplicated vote. This little poll does not really deserve that much explanation. There are bigger issues that need more urgent attention.

As for my curt suggestion to remove the feature; I apologize if my comment was received in a way that was offensive to developers. Economizing words in a thread sometimes leaves the wrong impression. Thank you for reminding me.

I'm guessing that the reason for the confusion with the current set up is that a user has asked the software to do something and the software hasn't done it, without giving any warning. I asked it to create a new floor plan for Level 1, I left all the default options in the dialog, and then it didn't create any view and didn't even tell me that nothing was created. It is counter intuitive that the default option in the dialog is "don't do what I just asked you to do".

Have I put my finger on the problem?

A more intuitive solution might be to have the checkbox unchecked by default -- go ahead and create the duplicate views -- but issue a warning if any duplicate views were created. Users could ignore the warning if they were intending to create duplicate views.
