    Good afternoon,
I am making a family for concrete grade beams (see attached). For the top and bottom bars I am trying to establish group arrays so that I can change the number of bars when required.
Trouble is when I flex the grade beam the bottom array bars aren't flexing. I haven't arrayed top bars yet, and they are flexing OK.
Anybody know how I can fix this situation?

Thanks and have a great day....

    Tom,
The problem: filled regions don't like to be locked to reference planes when arrayed. The trick to get this to work is to create the rebar filled region as a separate family, insert it into the host family. This will allow you to lock it to the required reference planes for the array.

    Stephen,
Many thanks for you quick reply. I made a separate "arrayBar" family as you suggested, but still can't seem to get it to flex properly. Also, my idea with the array bar is to be able to flex it in order to create different bar diameters. But as a nested family it does not seem to flex, defeating my purpose.
It would just be so darned elegant if I could get it to work....I'd have one grade beam family that I could use in numerous situations for detailing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and have a great day.

    Tom -

You can make the nested parameter flex in the main family by creating a parameter i.e. bar size in the main family and set the nested families parameter equal to that value. Select the nested bar family and pick properties in the property values (instance and type) pick the button under the = sign and pick the bar size parameter from the list. Does that make sense?

Hmm, I that is what I did. Try the family I posted above. I just didn't explain it all the steps. Thanks Jim.

I didn't try yours just saw Tom's question and responded. I will try not to practice my "speed reading" next time

Steven (sorry I spelled your name wrong before) and Jim,

Yes, I see now how to apply the bar diameter value to the nested parameter. That works very nicely.

Now I am trying to set up the top bars. I have the bar diameter changes working, but for the life of me I cannot see how you got the bottom bar array to flex correctly. How the heck did you do it? I attached the updated file to help get this figured out.

Thanks and have a great day.

Tom, click on the bottom bar array and when the array dimension/label comes up, click on it and then go to the lkabel pull down in the option bar and set the array parameter to "bottom bars". Lock the first one to the first ref plane and the last one to the last ref plane and it should flex. Do the same for the top bars. here is the file in finished form.

    Tom,
Ok, first delete the array you created. Then place "rebar top" outside of where you want to start the array. Use the align tools to lock it into position both vertically and horizontally at your intersecting reference planes. Then array the "rebar top" toward the end postion using the move to "last" option. Then use the align tool to lock it into postion as you did with the first one, both vertically and horizontally. Then assign your "Number of Top Bars" parameter to the array.

The array should behave correctly now. See the modified family I attached.
