Does AutoCAD have the ability to "unfold" or "unwrap" an object into a flat 2d?
I'm going to move this from the Tips & Tricks forum, as I believe it will be better served here. Thank you.Originally Posted by jnewell

Short answer - no.Originally Posted by jnewell
Inventor does. So do several other modelling packages. I believe there are sheet-metal type add-ons for acad.
Can this lisp program flatten out a curved plate stringer or railing that I create with ADT or Revit?
How does this lisp work, can you explain further?
I'm not familiar with ADT or Revit only AutoCAD.
You need to start with a ruled surface. This can have bends and twists in it.
If you have a solid you can explode it to make surfaces, and explode it again to make plines then create a 'rules surface' between 2 plines.
The routine will draw a flat pattern of this surface.
It's useful for designing things like boat hulls that are to be fabricated from sheet metal or plywood.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Aled for the explanation. I will try to play with it when I get some free time.
I'm trying to figure out how to unfold these stringers with your routine.
Can you give it a try and let me know if there is something special that i should be doing for it to work properly. Thanks a bunch it is greatly appreciated.
Is there a tutorial somewhere that explains how to accomplish this in inventor?Originally Posted by jaberwok
I have a copy and would become the office hero if I could figure it out.
I'm sure there is but I've only seen reference to it in print reviews.Originally Posted by Robert.Hall
