Hey, sometime in the next few weeks my new gig is supposed to be getting me a new Duo from Dell. Basically the crappier Dell/WindowsXP version of the MacBook. If you'd throw that file my way I'll run the same test, I'd be interested in seeing if the EFI vs. BIOS and such make much of a difference.

And on a side note, I just found out from a sysadmin friend of mine that EFI booting would allow a 32-bit machine to use up to 12 gigs of Ram. Apparently it's done all the time for Linux servers (that can happily use EFI for booting). Sigh. Windows XP 32 bit and Vista 32 bit in the future, apparently won't support EFI booting (only the 64 bit systems will) and so I'm betting will continue to have the 2-3 gig overhead for memory... Modern technology at it's finest.

How are these tests fair if you are comparing a single core PC machine versus a Dual Core Mac machine?

That's my point. The laptop that's on the way to me is going to be dual-core. It's actually internally the same as the MacBook, more or less, but with Windows it will be BIOS not EFI and there will no doubt be some chipset changes too. I'm interested if those things factor much into the overall speed of the applications on the computer...

It wasn't a test of fairness. It was just a comparison.

But then there's this (care of http://blog.wired.com/cultofmac/):

"GearLog, a blog associated with Digital Life has begun benchmarking Intel Macs running Windows XP to compare the machines to PCs running on similar hardware. Amusingly, the MacBook Pro's score for Photoshop performance beats every currently shipping PC laptop running on the identical Intel CoreDuo chip (only an Acer came close) from PC Magazine's testing."

So who knows. Multiple OSs in one box. Concurrent performance. Neat.

I like this quote, to be found on the right hand column:

    Word to the Wise
Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it’ll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes.

    EFI and BIOS
Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries.

Quote from the apple site. Gotta love it.

Not a day later I found this program. Now it's time for me to get a Mac.
