map query's from GIS shapes

Hi all.
I am trying to query elevation data from shapefiles. I have a drawing open that is an autocad drawing, and then I do an attach of that drawing.
After I attach I goto current query-->define --> location all -->then I pick alter properties and get elev from object data.

At this point, it should get the elevations from my object data, but after the execute has completed, I go and pick a line, and there is no z-value, it's still 0.

Basically, I am trying to give my regular 2d polylines a z-value and make them 3d polylines, and it aint working.

If anyone has any ideas, that would be great.
I'm on WIN2K and autocad 2005 map3d/ldd.

That query is slightly more complex than what I'm used to thus far. I'd just recommend checking to make sure you're query definition is correct.

yeah. I just forgot to hit "add query". I can't believe some of the simple things that screw you up for 3 hours.

I do this technique every 2-3 months or so. We'll get LIDAR Topo from a client and we'll need to switch from Shapefiles to dwg and vice versa.
