Default Lock in an angle for drawing a line

I enjoy teaching the big things (LISP, Xrefs, PS/MS, Standards, etc.) but I also get a kick out of teaching the little things too that often get overlooked or just fall between the cracks. (Poor neglected commands/options!)

Here's a neat little trick if you want to lock in an angle for drawing a line.

Start your line command and pick a start point.
At the Next Point prompt, type in something like "<17", without the quotes of course.
Move your mouse around to the area that would be at 17 degrees (or whatever angle you input) and PRESTO! instant polar angular override!

    Cheers,

    Robert

    Good one!
Twenty-odd years of using acad and I hadn't discovered that.

And if you want to specify a distance along with the angle use the @Length<Angle format.

For example if you enter @10<17 in the next point prompt of the line command, it will draw a line with length 10 unit at an angle 17 from the current point.

    har!s

Don't forget the venerable snapang command and using ortho.... also with ortho on, you can point in a direction and type in a distance and hit enter to "Ortho throw" a object, that can be moved back by repeating the process and "throwing" the object back, the same distance!

    har!s

But if you dont put in the @ in the command, isnt the next point based off the drawing origin??

Well, it's based on the origin of the current co-ordinate system which, for many users, will be the same thing.

Hang on.....surely the system has changed since release 2006. @ sign is now optional as AutoCAD assumes relativity by default. To force absolute co-ordinate entry the # sign can be used.

PS - Correct me if I'm off on a bender here, I got may have lost it a little while re-reading the above.

    Hi Noozy.

Yep. It's like that in A2006 but ONLY if dynamic input is switched on. I don't know about A2007 - still waiting...mumble... mumble..

Aha..! I've learned something today (I suppose that's what the T&T forum is all about). I never realised that, I've never tried switching dynamic input off.

Just had a little play with it in 2007 and yes, the functionality is the same.

DYN On - Relative co-ordinate default input
DYN Off - Absolute co-ordinates default input

    Ta. That's good to know.
I assume that you have no issues with slow input recognition with DI on? Several people have experienced missing characters, etc..
