There's no technical problem up to (I think) 31 characters.
The layer drop-down list won't display the whole name though. It will display the first few and the last few characters separated by ellipsis (...). One way around this is to use the wide dialogue function (Item 14) of Quikpik
What version of AutoCAD?
It's currently 255 characters, when EXTNAMES = 1
Layer names haven't been limited to 31 characters in many years (R14 IIRC)

Here is some more info on Quikpik and another utility that increases the width and height of the Layer drop-down box...
Object Properties Toolbar - Enlarge the Layer name box

Control "width" elements of toolbars
Have a good one, Mike
As long as you don't have to be back wards compatible with older versions of AutoCAD (r14 or earlier) then no problems with long names.
And any spaces are treated as returns when creating macros / lisps etc utilising layer names...
