Leave the Family Category (under settings) as Generic Model and you won't have to worry with an unnecessary window tag.. Your niche will be a family that you can insert into interior walls and whose size you can control per instance. I think it will be grip editable as well.
    Are you speaking in Revit?

I am asking the question about ADT2006 - not Revit.

    Thank you....

Here's how I would do it:

A multiview block with an interference condition. Insert it on a wall, add as an interference and it looks right (how I like to draw it) in plan, elevation and 3D. Bonus is that it's moveable along the wall without having to edit the interference condition.

I have rounded the corners which is nice for rendering but I might square them off for plans and elevations.

Let me know what you think.

I got to thinking about the previous posts and liked the idea of setting up a window style as a niche that could then be adjusted to different widths, depths, heights, etc.

So here is an updated .dwg with my window style niche and my mvblock niche.

The only think I like about the mvblock better is that I don't have to worry about it getting picked up by my window schedule.
