Default FTP or CVS for data transfer between offices

We have designers located in several different offices along the eastern seaboard and we've made a request to our IT department to set up an FTP site so we can transfer files and for setting up tool palette and catalog updates. IT came back and said they would like to set up a CVS site instead. I have no idea what this is. Can anyone tell me if it will be better or worse than an FTP site? Really could use some advice here.

I thought CVS was generally used for software updates. Often, open-source packages will have a "stable version," that has been subjected to a lot of testing, and "CVS" versions, which contain tweaks, fixes, or added features that are so newly written that their stability is unproven. Because these may have been contributed by anyone who takes the time to download, understand, and work with the code, "newly written" may mean less than 24 hours old.

    jswantek,
this is intresting idea to use a CVS site for drawings.
did your IT department set it up?
    does it work?
i'm going to question our IT department about this, it could be a solution to having a current drawing version.

Why not use a VPN to link all offices ? Worst case, just use file replication overnight for your librairies
