Angry Building Systems and Interference Checking

Yes, I am a little POed right now.

We read the white paper on ABS & RS and assumed it would be possible to do interference check with an ABS model imported into RS. We thought coordination between disciplines is touted as a major benefit of BIM, so this should definitely be possible. After all, "Autodesk Revit Structure is fully interoperable with Autodesk Building Systems," and that would certainly include interference checking, right? WRONG.

I was able to import the ABS model into my RS model, but all I can do is look at the pretty little ducts and chillers. All of the 3D information comes in as a block that cannot be exploded or modified in any way. I've tried just about every import option available, but no luck. Intereference check only works with other linked Revit files?

    Someone please help!

    Hi,
    From the Help section:

    "Exploding Imported Objects:
When you import an Architectural Desktop or Building Systems drawing into Revit Structure, the complete drawing is imported or linked as an Import Symbol. You can work more efficiently with the imported data by performing a partial explode on the imported drawing. This is the only way in which you can access the Architectural Desktop or Building Systems properties of individual objects. A partial explode breaks up the imported drawing into individual object blocks, but not into Revit Structure lines and text elements. For more information, see Exploding Imported Geometry.

You can explode or partially explode an imported drawing only using the import option in Revit Structure. You can never explode or partially explode an imported drawing if it was done by using the link option".

How come you cannot explode? Did you link or import? Looks like it should be possible.

Yes, I saw that, but no luck. The 3D block cannot be exploded. It's possible it has too many elements (10,000) to explode. Even if I do find a way to explode it, interference checking is still not an option. In the interference checking menu you are not given the option of checking against an imported symbol.

I would be contacting Revit Support with your issue, before getting any more PO'd.

Here is a process we discussed at a recent user group meeting in Sacramento.

    Hope this helps.

ok, the coffee has worn off so I'm no longer POed, but I'm still very disappointed. I have a feeling there is a workaround somewhere out there, but autodesk support is not going to help me find it...

    Dear Chris,

Thank you for choosing Autodesk Subscription.

Currently, interference checking only works between Revit models. ABS models can be brought in as a reference, but they cannot be used as fro interference checking.

I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if I can provide any more information for you. Thank you.

Did you try David's suggested workaround? It looked like it might work...

The way we're approaching it is to export our Revit Model out to ABS objects and use the collision checking in ABS. Doesn't help if you don't have ABS though!
