One of the problems I've found in families is that some of them are unnecessarily host-based, and there's no way to change that (except doing the unpleasant inplace family trick). I agree that some families really really need a wall or a ceiling, but others not. For example, in the standard library, the dishwasher is not wall-based, but the UK washer is. Why? It seems even the Revit library team doesn't exactly know which families should be host-based and which not.

I imagine two possible solutions for this:

    A) Being able to change the family type from the family editor.

    or

    B) Being able to insert host-based families outside of a host.

What about an on/off paramter that lets you turn hosting on or off for a family?

Yes, the on/off hosting parameter could be an ellegant solution.

bugger, oh well....at least it saved me time from trying to change a host based element.

yes Revit - this is a good idea to be able to change the hosting on/off on families
