Question Revit 9 problem with Symbolic lines in families

Has anybody else noticed the following glitch in Revit 9 ? I'm pretty sure it wasn't there in Revit 8.1.

When editing a family and adding a Symbolic Line to an elevation view for the first time (e.g. adding a door swing), the program asks you to specify the Work Plane (which is not really relevant for Symbolic Lines anyway) and then, when you do chose a Work Plane, the Symbolic Line "push-button" in the list of family editing tools on the left of the screen is released, and the line you draw is actually a Model Line, not a Symbolic Line ! To avoid drawing a model line, you need to push the "push-button" again.

Yes I can confirm this behavior. I was really scratching my head on this one too. It is a very unusual bug.

< repeat standard line mode on>

Have you submitted this as a Support Request?

< repeat standard line mode off>

I've had this happening in Revit 8.1 before but not 8.

I found this out yesterday as well. I thought I was crazy at first and kept selecting the wrong one.

Yes, I submitted a Support Request for this - even had a phone call from the person assigned to the problem and walked him through it on his computer - he agreed it was a problem, and would look into it. He did point out that it only happens when you select a family object in a project and click the "edit family" button on the options bar. If you start to edit a family from scratch it's not a problem.

Unhappy Re: Revit 9 problem with Symbolic lines in families

Hello again. Unfortunately, nothing's changed - the problem still exists in Revit 2011, although it's not as obvious now as the de-selection of the "push button" no longer exists due to the introduction of the "ribbon". I'm a bit disappointed that nothing has happened in the last 4-5 years, and that I never heard back on the support request submitted.

i must say i've never noticed this bug but i just replicated it in rac2011. if you close the workplane dialog and go to the home tab without drawing you'll see 'model lines' selected and on the annotate tab 'symbolic lines' is not selected. weird, since you actually pressed 'symbolic lines'.

however, it will only do this the first time you try to do symbolic lines in any elevation view, or until you give revit a workplane and draw some lines. if you come back to add more symbolic lines later (still in the same editing session) you don't get this buggy behaviour.

I thought I was going crazy...and the other Revit guru here looked at me like I was crazy. After I drew the line, I was able to convert it...but how do you draw the symbolic line in the first place, I can't seem to find any 'switch'. Thanks!

It's pretty sad isn't it, that this bug is still present in Revit 2011. A quick work around is to select the work plane when the dialog pops up, then immediately cancel the draw mode and go to the annotate tab and select symbolic line again. It will then let you draw a symbolic line without selecting a work plane.
