Unable to Delete Layers from drawing file

Trying to delete layers in a dwg. I do not see anything on the layer but when I go to delete it, I receive an error message below.

The selected layer was not deleted

The following layer cannot be deleted:
Layers 0 and Defpoints
The current layer xref - dependent layers



I am not trying to delete the 0 layer or the defpoint layer. I guess some data from the layer "that I can not see" is still on it. Is there a way to remove it so I can then remove the layer?

You may have blocks that have been deleted but not purged from the drawing.

It was the blocks.

Those are standard layers in any version of ACAD...
You may want to delete the Defpoints layer, but consider that all dimensions have their basepoits set un on the Defpoints layer.. So, for deleting it, you`ll have to dalete ALL dimensions in the drawing..
Regarding the Layer0, check any reference in this layer...
Try selecting all objects includedin a particular layer using quixkselect command, and you`ll see what I`m tacking about..

Anouther nasty thing I've found with time is some operators tend to delete text in the editor rather than just deleting it so acad still see's this as an entity, I've had to look at all the drawing as a whole on occasions and erase all of these from the picture, then purge.

I cant delete Xref dependant layers, that have completly nothing on them.

Open the xref drawing and purge them.

Try LAYDEL. It does however not only delete the layer, but anything that's on the layer as well. Even layers and entities embedded inside blocks. Use with care.
