    Cool Dimension Style, variable "Round Off" (Primary Units)?

    Hello.

    My question today relates to the variable “Round off” (Primary Units) of Menu “Dimension Style”.

    For what is used really this variable?

    If the variable “Precision” is already adjusted to 1/16” or other, dimensions are those of the elements associated.

    If “Round off” is also adjusted at 1/16” or other, the value of dimensions is sometimes erroneous and besides, in Preview of dialogue box “Dimension Style”, the change is visible.

    I would like to have more information about this variable if possible.

    You can round off the numeric values in dimensions and lateral tolerances.

    You can round off all dimension values except those for angular dimensions. For example, if you specify a round-off value of 0.25, all distances are rounded to the nearest 0.25 unit, if you specify a round-off value of 0.5, all distances are rounded to the nearest 0.5 unit. The number of digits displayed after the decimal point depends on the precision set for primary and alternate units and lateral tolerance values.


    When you specify the display precision of units, the values for coordinates and distances are rounded off. However, the internal precision of coordinates and distances is always maintained regardless of the display precision.

    For example, if you set the display precision of decimal-format units to 1 (or 0.0), the display of coordinates is rounded to one place after the decimal point. Thus, the coordinates 0.000,1.375 are displayed as 0.0,1.4, but the internal precision is still maintained.

    OK but variables DIMDEC (Precision) and DIMRND (Round off) are really different?

    Do not make they not with dimensions a little bit the same thing if the value given is the same one?

    If the need for the drawing is an precision of 1/32", why not simply use this value for DIMDEC… true dimension will be automatically adjust, not?

    Then why DIMRND???

    Do you have a concrete example for a line with dimensions with values DIMDEC or DIMRND or both but for the same precision, I am not certain to understand?

    Perhaps "round off" is just not very useful when using inches?
    As Steve showed, it certainly is useful when working in metric units.

    On second thoughts - that should probably be "decimal" not "metric".

    I struggle with imperial, I can understand and convert it to metric/decimal so say approx 300mm to a ft, 900mm to a yard etc. But as soon as it gets to 1/8", 1/16", 1/32" etc, my little brain stops working.

    So would you use imperial units to set out a grid with coordinates? Now I really don't understand how that would work.

    I was just saying that Round-off is probably useful for decimal inches, feet or any other decimal unit not just metric units.

    As for laying out in imperial - yes, why not? you just need to set your units appropriately before you start. I guess tens of thousands of others are doing it every day. (Poor them )

    As for conversion, let acad do it for you. Some commands (Line, Circle) will accept a division expression like "600/254" which will give you 60mm in inches. You can't have decimals in the expression hence the need to multiply top and bottom by 10.
    All other likely commands will accept " 'cal" followed by an expression like "65.5/25.4" which will give you 65.5mm in inches. If you need to go in the opposte direction - " 24 * 25.4 " will give you 24 inches in millimetres.

    FWIW, I used to have two toolbar buttons. One had the macro " *25.4 ", the other " *12.7 " (for entering inch radius values in a metric drawing).
