Exclamation GIS INTO AUTOCAD and BACK TO GIS

I have a general question. We have shape files that contains street lighting data that is 5.5MB We have centerlines that is in shape files with 23MB. We have centerlines Names in .eOO and the size is about 50MB. We have freeways and water that is in a shape file format and the size is 1.2MB combined. We would all this data to be included in the drawing. Furthermore, We want to add new street lights and then convert them automatically to shape file. Can someone give me a direction of how to accomplish this task.

Thank you and your feedback is appreciated

I do not know really what you are asking but you say you want it all in the drawing and you mention how large the files are. You can either import or link to the shape files and you might have a large DWG. To automatically convert would require some code I would imagine. It sounds like you might want to go the FDO route for the shape files if you want them in that format.

I work for the City of Los Angeles. We have our data in shape files. I have the following files: Centerlines, City Boundry, Street names, Water, Freeways, and Streetlights. The two biggest files are the Street names and Streetlights. Once i use mapimport, my file size becomes 28MB. As soon as i use a command it gives me an fatal error. My whole intention is to bring it into AutoCad and fence off a portion where i will be working. Add my new Streetlights and then save it back to shape files.

Sounds to me like the new data feature in R2007 was build just for that job. Have you looked at connecing to to the data edit the new streetlights in then saving the features back to the shp files. I haven't worked in it since the beta but that's the way to do it in R2007.

I have tried so many ways, but it always fail. I tried the display manager, map explorer, to bring my centerlines, freeways, water, city boundary, and then i use the mapimport to bring in streetlights and street names. I have nearly 198,000 streetlights. I have major, minor, secondary, highway, and alley annotation names. My whole intention is to bring it into AutoCad and fence off a portion where i will be working. Add my new Streetlights and then save it back to shape files.

I apologize for not getting the entire picture from what you are saying, but 28 MB is not a huge drawing so do not know why fatal error occurs. I know AutoCAD Map is very bad at fatal errors when it comes to images. I have had five a day sometimes and usually occurs when panning with the mouse, which doesn't turn of the image. Maybe outline what you have and what you want might help me understand. I have most experience in parcels and water datasets which have topped out at 160 MB. I store all data in shapefiles for users and like CAD for creation and maintenance and have always imported shp and exported shp files to and from CAD. I have mostly used the new FDO for reference and feature extraction so that might be the way you want to go like Jmurphy says

There are a few bugs admitted by tech support but I think are minor.

I have major, minor, secondary, highway, and alley annotation names.
I have never used annotation but prefer an OD key field that I join data to in the shapefile world.

    Good Luck

    I am doing the sam.
Create toplogogy and drawing cleanup in Map, then export data into shape file. I combine GeoMedia and ArcView, because each of this SW have some very good functions which are still missing in Map.

Now there was error if you are making tematic maping and using transparency, there is error if you try to convert shp files into MS SQL DataStore, Map can not read a large set of data from MS SQL Data store, and everything was happend after i have install SP2 form Map 3D 2007!.

For good GIS you must use more than one software tools!

I'm having trouble linking to a shapefile. When I import it through the task pane nothing shows up. Would a FDO be better? If so then, how do I change it to an FDO?

Zoom extends after you import and see if that makes a different. If the shp file is of a point type you need to set the pdmode (Format>point style).
