From what i know of is that the opteron is made for server and therefore has a total other infrastructure as a workstation. If you are looking for a new configuration for inventor I would first look at the athlon vs athlon X2 or even tha athlon FX dual core.
The thing is with AMD that they don't make 32 bit processors anymore - only the 64bits , but present software mainly is still 32 bits - and it will take a few more years till most programms are 64 bits. Inventor is now multitreathing so a dual core processor won't have much effekt on inventor alone. But the AMD FX is a lot compared with the INTEL Xeon and performance of the FX should be a bit better.

I've been running Inv 11 Pro on an AMD Athlon X2 4200+, and I've got to say, the performance I'm getting is pretty damn good.
