We have set the Revit default template to a file that does not exist in the folder where the real templates are located. Yes, you have to close a warning message each time you open Revit but you don't waste time opening a template file that you are only going to close anyway. If you do need a template, just hit File, New Project, Browse and you are in the proper folder.

We really just need an option to not open a default template.

Yes, but AutoCAD was the same way, and we complained about it for years, to no avail. Someone in Marketing thinks it is great I guess

I do like your workaround. Not graceful, but only because Revit won't let you have a graceful answer.

I believe the "open to a blank file" annoyance is a Windows standard. It's not much of a problem for Word or Excel to open up a blank document, but its much more of a pain when you have a 12 Meg Template default.

We just leave it at the Revit default Template & Browse to our network when we create a new Project. After all, how many times to you open Revit vs creating a new Project?

I don't know about speed, but we have found this methodology has helped with corrupted central files.

The thing about Word and Excel that's different is if you immediately open another file from your recent files list or browser, the 'default' doc or spreadsheet closes. I would be happy if Revit just did that.
