Apply line object data field to linetype?

Anybody know if there is a quick and dirty way to read the value of an object data field an apply a linetype accordingly? Example, I am importing ESRI .SHP files for water lines that have a field for the pipe size, I have linetypes for various pipe sizes i.e. "water8" for "8" Water".

If it's not quick and dirty, it's not worth the effort, I can just annotate the line with the value, but the linetype would clean it up a little for me.

Possibly create a Lookup table for the linetypes? They would need to be defined in the drawing before running the Import though. Might take two steps instead of automatically updating as the linework comes in, but it may be a bit faster of an option.

Use linetypes by layer then when you import create the lines on the layer obtained from the data. Another option is do a property query to change the line type after you import.
