What's in Vista beyond the pretty pictures
I don't mean to sound cynical... I just haven't found any information about Vista yet which would make us more productive, quite the contrary, it sounds like it will take more system resources away from real work, so what have other people found that looks promising?

Windows Vista RC1 is available now. I think I may go home tonight and give it a whirl - making sure everything is backed up first

My brother (a programmer) tried it, and he reported it was almost unusably slow. From the description quoted from Microsoft in the previous post, it looks like it's mostly a prettier interface that tries to do more system navigational hand-holding, which I'm guessing most CAD users don't need.

That's exactly what I was afraid of. I want less OS not more, though if it was more secure I wouldn't need to have so many resources dedicated to virus scanning...

That's all fine for your average home user who doesn't know a flash drive from a DOS prompt, but it would be nice to have a bare bones, stripped down, secure, O/S on which to run AutoCAD.. so we don't need 4GB ram....

That's kind of what I'm getting from it: Aesthetics over functionality.
From what Microsoft says, " Windows SuperFetch helps manage memory to get the most out of available RAM", it seems like they're trying to make up for it's resource-intensive GUI by managing memory in a more efficient way. I would guess that this makes it, at best, as resource intensive as XP, or simply takes it from "unuseable" to "useable with a great machine". I have a pretty good machine at home (AMD Athlon64 X2, 6 Gb Ram, FX4500), so I think I'm gonna give it a try and really see how she does. I expect they're still working out some bugs, so I would think the finished product would be, at least in some respects, improved.
Hopefully when the final product does come out it'll be worth having. Lord knows they didn't rush it like they did with ME, so that's a good sign.

Micros**t's motto for Windows has always seemed to be "never mind the quality, admire the bells and whistles". Why should Vista be any different?
