1.Name, location, and profession of the person.

    Phillip Bradshaw
    Macon, Georgia
    3D animator/modeler

2.When do they use CAD in the production process (i.e. preliminary design, design development, etc.),

    Almost solely conceptual design.

3.The types of standardization used -

None needed really; occasional collaboration with other firms dictate the use of certain layering and submittal standards.

4.Advantages or disadvantages that CAD brings to their practice -

We are completely dependant on multiple CAD platforms, graphics applications and post-production software. The advantages of CAD software alone are too many to count; the biggest advantage we can gain is through the hardware that grinds the gears of the CAD app.

    Thank you so much!!!!!

    No problem!

    1. Name, location, and profession
    Jane Smith
    Abilene, TX
    Contract Drafter

    2. When do you use CAD in the production process (i.e. preliminary design, design development, etc.)
Most of my work is AutoCAD with Raster Design. I take old drawings of power plants, scan them, clean, then update them.

    3. The types of standardization you use
Each engineer in this office is of a different background, so the only real standard we have is the title block.

    4. Advantages or disadvantages that CAD brings to your practice.
It makes it easier to rebuild or update thousands of drawings. We don't have to rely on getting paper drawings copied & sent to different places. I can print to a plant that is 200 miles away almost as fast as I can in our own office. Updates take minutes, instead of days. We can back up drawings in 2 different places, so in case of disaster in one location, all is not lost. We don't have any real disadvantages because of CAD.

If I can be of more help, just let me know.
Give people a job worth doing, the tools to do it, recognition of a job well done & get out of the way.

I work for an large electrical contractor on projects between $5 and $50 million. I use CAD (specifically Autodesk Building Systems 2007) to coordinate my electrical conduits and cable trays with the other trades (ie HVAC, Plumbing, Fire Sprinkler). We usually draw in 3D and use software (NavisWorks) to check for collisions.

That's a tough one. We have set up in-house standards for layers, plot styles etc which are loosely based on AIA standards. Since we are a contractor we are always using other peoples drawings so having a rigid standard is difficult.

The advantages are plenty. We are able to reduce costs of installations dramatically by finding and identifying problem areas before construction. The ability to provide dimensioned drawings to the crews is also a huge advantage. The main disadvantage is that field crews tend to think they don't have to check our work and if we miss something they tend to not take any responsibility for the error.

    Hope this helps,

Hi "mdfas782" ( Sorry, I do not know your real name )

Please note I have *moved* this thread from the AutoCAD General forum to this one, as I feel this particular forum is a more appropriate place for such a topic.

    Thanks, Mike

1.Name, location, and profession of the person.

Carl Collins, London UK, Multi-disciplinary Architectural/Building Engineering CAD Manager

2.When do they use CAD in the production process (i.e. preliminary design, design development, etc.),

From early concept through to record drawings.

3.The types of standardization used -

Being in a very large company, we have a strict set of standards (they even get followed sometimes!) that were developed in-house.

4.Advantages or disadvantages that CAD brings to their practice -

CAD brings a much faster design process and allows us to change the design much more quickly, also helps keep all our disciplines working from the same design iteration. We sometimes find that CAD limits the design process for Architects/Engineers that struggle with the technology.

    Ray Mendoza

CAD Drafter/programmer/designer/manager (or Draft-ogram-design-ager) (Official title: CAD Systems Administrator)

2.When do they use CAD in the production process (i.e. preliminary design, design development, etc.),
Specifically I use CAD at the Quote/Manufacturing phase

3.The types of standardization used -
For now it is what I say, not what has been written. I tell the guys what is acceptable and unacceptable. Whenever they have a question they come to me. I guess I am the walking CAD Standard here. However, I am trying to work on a written standard if I can ever finish all the drafting work I do.

4.Advantages or disadvantages that CAD brings to their practice -
Advantages: Faster Production, Higher quality of product, eases installation for customer.

Disadvantages: Under paid, peope assume what we do and choose not to understand, lack of intelligent CAD people.

    I hope this helps...

    Hi Jane,
Could you possibly elaborate on Raster Design and how it is utilized with CAD?
    Thanks again for your response!
