Warped Deck/Slabs??

I was just told by one of our architects that RS has the ability to model warped deck/slabs and RB does not. (not for sure what version). They said that if we model than they can put it into theirs. I know that it can do warped steel framing pretty good. In my searching of the newsgroupsI have found that it is possible, but you have to model with extrusion blends. Seems like RB should be able to do it this way also. Has any of this changed? If so how can it be done? When using slope arrows in a roof it can not create the roof. If the extrusion blend approach is still the method of choice does anyone have a simple bay example or a quick list of steps to do so?

Hey Jamie, I think the in-place blend of type roof or floor is still the way to go. Attached is a quick example. I'm not sure about the ease of placing the sloped framing in RB but I don't see why modeling the deck / slab with this method wouldn't be possible.

Hi,
At present the only way is to use the blended solid form to create the warpage. My class at AU is on this exact subject (as Jamie knows since he will be assisting). So you can do this in RB as well.

I have been developing a workflow that goes like this:

1. Create the blended solid form to represent the warped deck.
2. Select all columns and attach to the underside of the deck.
3. With 3d snapping enabled draw girders from column top to column top.
4. Then add in your bay framing with the beam system tool.

If you need to edit the framing you can redo the deck and the column tops will stay attached to it. Unfortunatley at this time the girders will not stay attached to the column tops so you have to manually re-adjust them. The in-fill beams on the other hand will move with the girders. I have really been trying to impress upon the developers the need to keep the girders and column tops connected. It would make editing fairly simple.

In the future we hope to see a deck form where we can specify ridge lines and drain points and have the deck warp automatically to those points.

Thank you both for you response. I think that the arch is getting confused between warped framing and warped decks. Both of your comments/info reassured me that how we are doing it and what has been talked about in the past is still probably the best and most correct way to achieve this.

Yes, that was my article on Revit Structure 3 in which I featured this technique. I have been obsessed for the last two years trying to get Revit Structure to be able to handle "flat" roof warped roofing. We are finally starting to get there and I hope by release 5 that we will see lots more flexibility in the application. I am definately encouraged...

Has Revit gotten any better at this? When I do get my framing to slope as required I still have a problem with the Steel Deck. Revit bends the deck right along the split lines, but a beam or joist going through that split line is not going to bend. Revit draws the joist straight and the deck bent leaving me with a goofy section (see attached jpegs). What am I supposed to be doing that I am not?

What behavior are you expecting?

I would expect the deck to lay flat on all supporting members and warp, not kink in one spot. This would be just what real deck does in the same situation.

Then use the "pick support" option. It will lay the deck flat on the beams assuming that you have sloped them properly.
