Default Copying a viewport sometimes converts the viewport into a Polyline

Sometimes I am able to copy a viewport and the rectangle or polygon is copied and it STAYS a viewport and all the objects inside are copied over as well (the view)

Sometimes though, I copy the viewport and it comes out as a straight rectangle .... NOT a viewport ..... is there a variable or setting as to why this happens or is it AutoCAD gnomes?

I've always wondered this but never asked ... until now (*dun dun DUUUUUN*)

I've never had them change to a polyline, but I have had them turn themselves off at times.
Are the originals clipped by any chance?

One way is to select it and right click, then Display Viewport Objects and click Yes. Or under Misc on the Properties pallet thingy, change On to Yes.

Edit: I was just playing around copying viewports, and it seems that when copied using CTL-C (copyclip) it turns them off, but if I use the copy command, it doesn't. Weird.

Which way are you doing it?

They just do get turned off by default - you can't change this, all you can do is turn them, back on as mentioned above.

I think it was a wish list to either have them turned on by default when copied or at least get given the option.

Never had them just turn to plines though.

Okay, so the WEIRDEST thing is happening with that drawing file now.

As it turns out, the viewports ARE set to Display On --> No in the Properties dialog.

BUT when I turn it on (set the variable to 'yes') ANOTHER viewport turns OFF!! When I turn that one back on, another viewport turns off! I can repeat this process over and over and the offending viewport cycles ........ in other words, it's ALWAYS a different viewport that displays this behaviour .....

    What is the deal?

Yes that is weird. It should work as you are doing it, ctrl+C, right click and copy etc etc should all work.

A work around in the mean time, is to use the match properties instead of turning the pasted viewport on.
