Default Export a TIFF from AutoCAD with the background transparent

    hi all.
i am trying to use a drawing as a figure in an excel spreadsheet. this figure will prolly take up half of a standard letter size.

i want to export the dwg as a tif(which I can do) but I want the background to be transparent(no color, which i can't seem to do). i always end up with a black(or white) background depending on which background I choose.

is this possible? is there a workflow for this? i do have some photoshop skills, but it seems like this would be straightforward to do in Autocad.

    TIA

Raster images map a color for every pixel in the image, so there's no such thing as truely transparent. In acad if an image's color depth is 2, or bitonal, (bk & w), then it can 'turn off' the white and only display the black, by replacing the white with whatever else is on the screen. Again, that only works with bitonal images, even though you can select 'transparent' on any IMAGE. Going the other way, exporting out of acad, all you're going to get is a tif. Some other raster editing programs can add a layer of information that can create a mask by mapping a color you choose to be the 'transparent' color. Sort of like the way movie makers use the "green screen".

Question Re: Export a TIFF from AutoCAD with the background transparent

    Hi

Instead of outputting to TIFF have you looked into using WMF instead ?

    Have a good one, Mike
