Default DWG file...not developed...by Autodesk error

    AutoCAD 2007 - Windows XP

I am getting this dialog box when opening up one of the project files. this file is 1 of 300+ files and is the only one giving me this dialog. Any idea what is causing this? It happens on any machine we try it with. It happens with the drawing saved as 2004 or 2007. AutoCAD 2006 will display the "Drawing file is not valid." dialog box.

We do use Revit Structure in house but this project is no where near Revit and the people working on it do not have Revit on their machine.

    Any ideas??

    thanks,
    jamie

Was the drawing last saved with a non-Autodesk product?

That dialog has a lot to do with this lawsuit, and the countersuit

I figured as much. I have ignored the error message for the most part.
I have noticed it popping up when coworkers are using different versions
of Autodesk products. Annoys some of the lesser computer literates in my office.

Is this base AutoCAD? Perhaps you should do a SAVEAS a MUCH earlier version? Purge it and try the saveas R14 option. This should clear out anything going on with the file and update it when opened again in 2007.

This is a guess (untested) but seems logical it should clear out the "bad" data that causes the message. Just be sure to keep a backup version of this file in case saving it back so far causes it to lose any functionality.

That is a very good point that is often overlooked. I can't tell you how many times I have found people trying to "fix" a DWG file (or any file for that matter) and they forget to stash a copy of what they started with....

Thanks for the info. Interesting reading. We are still trying to figure out on our end what saved this file to activate this dialog. Acad2006 would not open the file because I had it saved as 2007. Bringing the file up in 2006 and saving it down than pulling it back into 2007 seemed to stop the dialog box.

I had a few things to say on this subject in Bug Watch November 2007 (written some time before the writs started flying!).

If I take a PDF and export it to DWG/DXF in Adobe Illustrator I get that error opening it in acad.

So it's not always a bad thing...
