Default hosted v. non-hosted family components

We're doing a lot of multifamily work, and using groups to arrange units. The biggest challenge we have is with hosted family components (tubs, wall cabinets, closet rods, etc). They don't really behave consistently in groups. Our main Cad guy recommended that we just redesign all the components we need as non-hosted. Question one - is there any real drawback? Besides having to align the edge of a tub to a wall manually (as you do with a toilet or base cabinet) i don't see any benefit. And 2- is there an easy way to change them, like a switch? It looks like the protocol is to open the hosted family and copy the model over to a new non-hosted family. Not too bad, really.

Default Re: hosted v. non-hosted family components

Hosted objects don't "have" to be unless they are altering the host in some fashion like a door or window does, they cut holes in the walls. So it isn't a prerequisite that a tub or sink be wall hosted. There is no quick fix for making a hosted family not hosted however and it can be problematic just pasting one into another but if you are patient you can get there.

As for moving with the wall as hosted families do you could choose to check the "Moves with nearby elements" option for such elements.
