This is an email I received from one of the Revit users at my office. Thanks to Brad Paul of HKS for turning me on to this.

You guys may have already figured this one out, but I’ve learned a way to create curbs and gutters that follow contours (see attached)
1. Create your topo surface as you usually would
2. Draw a reference line (using model lines) at your edge of curb. This line will make it extremely easy to create everything using offsets.
3. Select ‘split surface’ and separate your different areas (grass, curb, gutter, road). This is made simple by selecting the reference line each time and hitting tab to select all. Just be sure to set the offset correctly (12” for gutter, 6” for curb, 5’-6” for sidewalk, etc).
4. To create the vertical curb edge, do another ‘split surface’ on either side of the original curb line. The split surfaces will need to be ½” offset each. This will create the top and bottom of the vertical surface.
5. In elevation view, move the road, curb, and ½” offset down 6”
6. You now have a ½” wide surface at 0” elevation and a ½” wide surface at -6” elevation.
7. Click the ‘merge surfaces’ button, select the lower ½” split surface, and then the upper ½” split surface. This creates the vertical.
