Unable to change selected Object properties via toolbars

Hello
i´ve got a good problem that has me ageing at an accelerated rate!
some of my toolbars have become unresponsive in particular layer, properties and styles.
A demonstration is in order - I select a line (or any other object) then go to the layer toolbar to change its layer nothing happen,same thing happens with linetype or with the styles toolbar if the object was text instead of a line, the only way to change this is doing it with the floating properties palette.I´ve tried searching the help files for ideas to reactive (if that´s the case) but got zero, used google but nothing worth mentioning (maybe phrasing it wrong?),ah one more thing this happened after a couple of wrong keystrokes (you know you brain is going one direction and your fingers another.)maybe there's a combination for doing this,i found nothing,but my toolbars went AWOL after that.So that´s it!
I would appreciate any input, and i really would like to stop this premature age thing don't look good with white hair!

What is system variable PickFirst set to?

If set to 0 (zero), set it to 1 (one).

Don't forget about the power of the F1 key or help menu. It's very helpful and you can find just about anything with it as well. Either way, fellow AUGI members are always glad to lend a helping hand.

after 3 re-installs on the machines this happened to, the 4th one made me wonder and waddaya know... (stupid spontanious setvar changes...)
