From what I've read, delete all of the layer filters in the drawing and source drawings and audit the drawing first. If not sucessful, try the method HERE, which involves repathing the xrefs.

Don't know if you had a resolution to your original problem. I've had this same message pop-up when trying to REFEDIT blocks - not xrefs. The work around that I've had success with is to redefine the block within the drawing where the problem occurs.
