Raise to the power

Have you had trouble in showing something raised to the power of a value or showing a superscript? Here is an easy way to do that.

MText

Type the desired character followed by a carrot symbol (^). Select both the character and symbol, then click on Stack button on top of the window.You can convert alphanumerals using this method.

eg: 20th Century (select th^), 100mm2 (select 2^)

DTeXt

Using Unicode values in supported fonts, we can show the same effect in DText (though it's limited). For example the following character combination show mm square using 'Romans' font.

mm\U+00B2

Using 'Microsoft Sans Sereif' font, the following gives you mm cube.

mm\U+00B3

I have been using the unicode method.
That is a great tip for mtext. I wouldn't
think to try the stack option.
Since when does something programmed
into AutoCad make sense? It doesn't look stacked.

a short for squared and cubed is with Mtext editor open right-click then choose symbol

Or even you can goto Symbols-->Other to open Windows Character Map Application to copy the right symbol from there.Sometimes some fonts does not support some characters. For example, in Romans, you get 1/4 (Quarter) and 1/2 (half) symbols, but you don't get 3/4 symbol inside. Here is a trick to overcome that.

Type 3^/^4 in the MText editor.
Select 3^ and click on the stack button to superscript 3.
Select ^4 and stack it to get subscript 4.
Adjust the forward slash (/) size to get a real look.

This is how I create 3/4 symbol in Romans. Does not look perfect. But it's far better than the plain 3/4.

The way I had been doing it is by writing 2/1, then stacking and changing it to a tolerance, then erasing the subscript.

I don't know when it changed, but you used to have to select (highlight) the character, the carrot and a space and stack it, to create the result you described. I'm working in ADT 2006 and as you said, just the character and the carrot does it!

BTW you can do "subscript" by doing the opposite, the "carrot" then the "character" and select stack.

Just a few more shortcuts for ye, instead of using stacking, hold down the left ALT key and type the following numbers into the keypad. It's much easier and looks better for fractions.

½ = Alt + 0188
¼ = Alt + 0189
¾ = Alt + 0190
° = Alt + 248
³ = Alt + 252
² = Alt + 253

You can either use charecter combination method or keystroke method. Both are visible in the Charecter Map application. The problem with this method is that it's very limited to a very few combinations. For example you can not raise to the power of 4 using this method because most of the fonts do not support that character. You will have to use stack or similar methods.

You should use a leading zero to pad all values to four characters.
Sometimes it will work with just three characters but it's best not to rely on it.
