I'm working on a project that calls for using some expanded metal for a guard on the end of a rotating shaft. Anyone have any ideas on how that can be modeled?

The usual process is to model it as a solid and make the color one of the Expanded Metal from the drop down list. These colors are made from texture bitmaps that include magenta for the holes. Magenta is shown as transparent so you have the cosmetic effect of being able to see through the "holes" without the processing overhead of creating them as features. If you want the edge faces to appear as solid bands you can RMB on the edge face and change the Properties to a solid color. If you can't figure it out I will post an example or post your file.
Now why didn't I think to look there? Thank you! The patterns are rather small, more like screen than expanded metals, but I suppose they'll work.
You can edit the scale and save as your own pattern with the Styles Editor.Originally Posted by jswantek
