Unhappy Cannot modify the library file...

I created some stock structural steel extrusions w/ INV 11 for company use. Now when I open the individual parts and try to edit the feature length, I get an error message: "Cannot modify the library file M:\Inventor Library\W Shapes\w8-18.ipt" This is a bit disconcerting since I created hundreds of stock extrusions for structural steel components. I can insert them into an assembly, but cannot edit them individually to modify lengths. What can I do to get these parts fixed? Does it have something to do with the "lock" files I find in the directories?

Did you make the parts as i-parts?

The lck file shouldn't have an effect on it. That's just how Windows/Inventor mark the file as being open by you (the lck file goes away when you close the file).

Also, Is there a warning when you try to edit the file? Files in Library Paths can't be changed. You may have to move it to a non-library path.

The structural steel components are not iParts and they are mapped via projects as an additional part file source. What I'm understanding is I should remove the project path from the part file library that contains the structural steel extrusions. That would only leave me with the main project path that I save my personal projects/assemblies/drawings. Tell me if this is correct.

Actually, if you move the part from the library to a non-library (worspace or workgroup) path, you should be able to edit the part. You shoudn't need to delete the library path entirely.

    Try this:

Open file and check it out.
Close file and do not check it back in.
Click File pull down menu and then select projects and then select Library directory (it was on Projects directory)
    Click OK
Open file back up (notice that selecting Model on Browser Bar doesn't show Vault tab because you are in the library vault of your c: drive now)
Make needed changes to file and save
Click File pull down menu and then select projects and then select Projects directory (it was on Library directory)
Open file back up and check it back into the vault.
This is the way I modify my library files when needed.

    Good Luck,

    Jim
