Default Viewing surface in Object Viewer Problem

I wasn't sure where to put this, but figured it should be here.

I have created a corridor and made a surface from it. When I go into the object viewer to look at and make sure it hasn't got weird things going on, I can see the rendering for the asphalt from the top view. However, when I rotate the view, I can see the rendering doing really weird things. It matches the top view but when rotated, it has totally different elevations. I've tried to capture a shot of it but once I rotate it the rendering disappears when I let go of the mouse button afterwards. Can someone tell me what the heck is causing it? The surface elevations have so far matched what they should be when I've checked along the corridor.

make sure the surface layer is on in addition to the layer SRF-VIEW layer.
