Document Management Software

Is anyone using any document management software, ala Buzzsaw but preferably hosted in house? Any recomendations? Thank you.

Don`t know if this is any help but we used to use Cyco's Enhancement 1 but it became really unreliable, It may be worth having a look at <http://www.oasys-software.com/> at the Columbus document management system by Ove Arups SYStems group. I haven`t used it but it may be worth some consideration - partly because I think its free and you only pay for training / customisatiom

I don't agree with adesk's concept to push Buzzsaw as a document management system. We are also looking at dms, and the var tried to suggest Buzzsaw. But that would require everone to be online, whether they needed it or not. If all your work is in-house then why use an online hosting service? Unless you just don't want the expense or headache of a file server. But if you already have an IS dept and servers, etc., Buzzsaw doesn't make sense. Currently there are only 2 companies with software that is certified by Adesk to work with Inventor (and by extension, other adesk products). They are Cyco and Synergis. We currently have Cyco Automanager Workflow, but are considering changing to Synergis Adept. Cyco's next gen software, Teamwork is not customizable and more expensive than Adept. Another possibility I am looking into is adesk Vault. Free with Inventor and it uses MSDE client-server software. They claim it works for up to 8-10 users before performance becomes an issue and you need to upgrade to SQL Server.

I agree, Buzzsaw is not a product designed for in-house document management. It was my impression that it wasn't really focussed on document management at all. Where Buzzsaw really shines is when multiple offices need to communicate, or even better... multiple different companies (arch, engineers, contractors, and clients) have to be able to collaborate on one project.

We have produced some add-ons for specific clients which make Buzzsaw more of an attraction as a document management package, however you are correct in saying on its own it does not appear to be ideally suited.

I just took a look at the oasys site before answering. The situation has changed there. The free version is no longer able to work with networks and servers - just on the single pc.
