Office Standard font choice - Are Adobe OpenType fonts an option?

We are trying to chose a new standard font for our company. We had been using Century Gothic, a true type font, but we ran into issues because we can not adjust the blackness of the text (it is either bold or roman). Our office does not care for any of the standard shx fonts that ship with Autodesk 2007 (Roman, archstyle, etc), otherwise we would use these because we can change the thickness with pen settings.

We are looking at possibly purchasing a new font/set of fonts to cover our needs. Can someone give me a straight answer as to whether Architectural Desktop 2007 will work with Adobe OpenType fonts? If not, where else can I find high quality legit fonts for purchase?

I know that it is possible to have other fonts from different programs work in AutoCAD. I used to do it all the time so that we would stop recieving the error message from special texts that the architects used. The only problem that we ran into was that only about 80% to 90% of the texts would go through when we would do a mass addition of text fonts. Hope that helps.

We use Times Roman for title blocks, and Swiss for regular text. The nice thing with Swiss is the numerous thickness options it ships with. If your work stations have MS Office, you should be good to go.

We currently use two fonts, One is a single stroke Architectural font while the other is a double stroke font. These are not out of the box shx fonts but something we have accumulated over the years and stuck with. Both are shx fonts while the double stroke font has a lot of sub keys within it to similate common symbols used in the AEC industry. (ie. when you press the "<" key it will insert a center line symbol in lieu of the less than sign.

The notes on our drawings according to the checklist have to be upper case ROMANS height 1.8mm and in colour red which is pen 1.8. It used to be Arial lower case till the engineers came on board.

By-the-by all other documents, letters, specs are in Arial 12pt.

I read that article before I posted, but I have no way of knowing if Adobe Open Type fonts use true type outlines or not, their website just talks about how true type and post script has been integrated into open type.

Does anyone know if Adobe Open type fonts are post script based, true type based or both? And will they work with ADT 2007?

It looks like the only way to tell is to try the font . It's possible that some of the Adobe supplied fonts could be created with either outline.

but.... Adobe _is_ postscript. It seems a good bet that their font products will be derived from Postscript font families, not TrueType. You could pick the font you'ld like to use and try it, but I expect you would spend money and get no benefit. There are other vendors and suppliers out there.

<on soapbox> I'm all in favor of people using something other than TXT, but please stick with a Autodesk or MS vendor supplied font. It's a royal pain down the road having to deal with atypical fonts in electronic drawings. </end soapbox rant>

Autodesk TS79744. Support for Open Type Fonts in Autocad based Products - Interesting that this only lists up to 2004

There are a few other discussions on the Autodesk Knowledge base and discussion group which seem to say the same thing, although they do seem to mostly refer to releases up to 2004, I can't find much on 2006-2008.

Yes Adobe Open Type Fonts are postscript (I think) . There is some info here which may be worth a look.
