Thumbs down Autodesk Impression with H P Pavillion dv6000 laptop

As an architect I'm naturally interested in adding Impression to AutoCAD 2008 but find that a H P Pavillion dv6000 laptop is unsuitable according to the check-programme as it has only 32mb video memory, yet according to H P's spec it has an Intel GMA950 graphic card with a memory of 126mb(shared). Is this because it is has a dual platform and the check-programme can only read half of the memory?
Has anyone successfully installed Impression with 2008 on this laptop?

This is my hunch. The rating of 32 Meg is probably the minimum rated. When video memory is shared off the system memory, there is typically a minimum set-point the driver won't permit the graphics to run below. I would download the trial from Autodesk's website and try it to see how it would work first hand.

By the way, welcome to AUGI.

I wouldn't even consider purchasing a machine with shared video memory in the first place. That's one of the largest performance bottlenecks possible, and one of the ones that you can't really do a whole lot about after the fact.

Very true, I feel the same. The problem is finding reasonably priced lap tops with dedicated video. I can't remember seeing any lower than the $800-$900 price range.

Last one I bought was just a hair under $3200

    But it's worth every penny.

When purchasing a computer, remember "the three p's" - power, price, portability. Pick two, the third you will have to compromise on.

    Powerful and portable, but expensive.
Portable and cheap, but not powerful.
Powerful and cheap, but not portable aka desktop computer.

    and so on.

Which makes me wonder why people aren't demanding white box standards for laptops. Most of the workstations in our office I built, and saved us literally thousands of dollars. I'd love to take a crack at building a laptop.

Having done repairs on several, it's definitely a little more demanding than slapping in a PCI card OEM parts are a little tougher to come by, but it's pretty easy to buy parts off eBay and build your own midrange laptop for little investment

That's my point! Isn't it about time for laptops to conform to a universal standard like the ATX and BTX standards in towers.
