    Try inserting the problem drawing as a block into a new empty drawing.

    Try posting one of those problem drawings here
    or send one to me so that I can poke at it here
    and see what makes it twitch.

    Hi

    As you're running and Autodesk 2004 (or 2005) product have you tried the following -

    <snip>
    Error Reporting utility let's you send in reports to Autodesk if AutoCAD crashes. Do it and make the next Service Pack or Release more stable. If AutoCAD ends unexpectedly, and the Error Report message is not displayed, make sure the REPORTERROR system variable is set to 1.
    </snip>

    What Operating System are you running + does this have the latest Service Packs and Critical Updates installed?

    Check out the following thread (the bit of interest is the snippet from Ed Jobe) -

    Red AutoSNAP marker

    Issues/Problems with random crashes are notoriously difficult to resolve due to their very nature.... hopefully Ed's little guide will help.

    Check out the following Technical Document on the Autodesk web site under the Knowledge Base section -

    ID: TS19369 - Recover damaged drawing when RECOVER command is not successful

    Have a good one, Mike

    I don't have experience with 2004, but we sometimes have a similar problem with 2002. If AutoCAD gets through part of the process of opening the drawing before it crashes, we've found that you can sometimes get to a Command: prompt by pressing the ESC key after you click the "Open" button on the file dialog but before AutoCAD crashes. (ESC, which AutoCAD interprets as "Cancel," stops AutoCAD from regenerating the drawing). If you can get to a Command: prompt, then you can run AUDIT to try to fix the data on which AutoCAD is choking.

    We have also found that Intellicad (www.cadopia.com - I think they have a free trial download) can sometimes open drawings that AutoCAD cannot. Sometimes just opening a drawing in Intellicad and saving it with that program makes the drawing usable in AutoCAD again.

    ^^ thats a really good idea. it seems to be crashing right after it goes to regenerate. i finally was able to open the drawing with autocad 2005 but i'm going to try that suggestion just to see if it works.

    thanks everyone

    I use restore in 02, then when I have the drawing open I'll -wblock it to the same name (if it's only in one space) using a crossing to get only what I want (usually everything in the normal extents), then close the file WITHOUT saving. I know most of you folks out there use model and paper space, the company I work for goes model only, so this is a solution that works about 98% of the time for me, plus it has the added benefit of purging the drawing to the max. If you have unused layers (or dimstyles or textstyles) you want to keep in the drawing, just put something on the layer (or dimstyle or textstyle) and include it in the -wblock. You can delete that stuff later and you'll still have the layers (or dimstyles or textstyles)...
