create template from existing project

does anyone know of quick way to create a template from an existing project, i.e. removing all the placed content but keeping all the families, views, sheets etc. it usually takes me an hour to do this manually and eventually i'll find some old junk in my new project (areas, rooms etc).

i guess this would require some api-programming?

There's no quick way as far as I know. The old-fashioned approach of purging and finetuning works best for me.

What about using the transfer project standards tool? You could take a lot of stuff from an existing project and place it into an "empty" project. Then sqave the "empty" project as your template. Still might have to do some clean up but it should get you close.
