    Default comparative surface philosophy

I hope some brave soul will wade into this one: when approaching a new modeling task, what about the model leads you to start with a mesh, a patch, a poly or a nurbs? Would you please expound on what each of these techniques tends to do best, if that's not too naive a question. Or if, as I suspect, it's a larger subject than fits in a post, could you just get me started in the right direction for finding out more? Any help will improve my sleep. Thanks

It is an extremely large topic....though i would suggest starting out with an editable poly. There are lots of tools available in editable poly that make the modeling process easier as well as cleaner. Keeping everything as quads is the way to go. it really does com down to personal choice though...amazing models can be achieved with any of the modeling methods....NURBS, edit mesh, surface tools etc. Try them all see which one suits you as well as the task.
