Red face I-beam intersecting an ellipical lofted post

I'm doing a classic drafting problem - Belt Tightener Assembly - and the frame has a "post" that has an ellipical cross section that starts with a 12mmx32mm ellipse going to a 12mmx48mm ellipse. I lofted this 140mm without a problem. Then there is an I-beam 26mm from the bottom, that intersects the post at 90 degrees. The I-beam is 30mm tall and the width is to the tangents of the ellipical loft. The ribs are 4mm. I cannot, correctly, get the I-beam to end at the tangents, for the width of the beam. I cannot, corectly, get the I-beam to end at the surface for the length. So what is the answer?

    Looks like a homework problem.

It is a homework problem. I teach at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Check me out on the web - kvcc.edu. I can do this problem on several different cad systems, but not Inventor. So can you give me some suggestions on how to create this part?

I have the solution on my home computer.
If you could zip and post what you have so far I could get you in the right direction.
Not sure why it would make any difference what CAD program was being used to create the geometry.

    JD -

I agree with you about having no problems on 1 system and problems with Inventor. Getting the wide lines of the beam to project to a plane has been a problem. I can get 1 wide line ( where the ellipse starts and stops) but not the other. Sometimes I can get the other wide line to project, but the line is un-useable. You can see it but can not select it.

    Is your example 100% Inventor?

Projecting the I-beam to the ellipical post will not go to a surface for me. I have to enter a distance.

    Thanks for hanging in there....

I think you misunderstood me - I would model it the same way in any CAD program.
I will attach the model I did in Inventor tomorrow along with comments.
Meanwhile you might want to go to this link

and click on the MA13-3 link and read through the pdf document. There is also a like to a set of files that go along with the pdf.

I laid out the problem again is a way that you should be able to follow my technique.
In the browser pull down the red End of Part Marker step-by-step. You might want to right click on each sketch as you go and turn off the dimesion display to reduce clutter. I left them visible so you could see the symmetry relationships that I built into the dimensions.

I make liberal use of construction lines even when not technically needed - more so than in years of using AutoCAD since leaving the drawing board. This helps in editing a part a year from now as it is clear how the sketches were built.

Use symmetry to reduce the number of workplanes needed and full constrain each sketch as you go. Use the origin Centerpoint in a logical location for the design.

AHHH loft rails. Once I saw that, the part is easy. Thanks!!
