Angry Extremely long processing time to PDF/DWF

Is anyone experiencing problems when processing DWFs or PDFs through Revit 2008? We have no problems when processing drawings that do not have any shade and shadows on, but as soon as we turn shade and shadows on it can take up to an hour to process one sheet. (typically elevations and 3d views) This differs between the size of the job, but typically the file sizes are around 50-80mg. Usually complex multi storey buildings.

We are running dual core processes with 3-4gig of ram, Win XP Pro SP2, and a quadro FX3500 graphics card. We are using the dwf writer that comes with Revit and 'PDF Creator' for our PDFs

We have downloaded the latest Revit build,
We have tried adjusting the clip range on the elevations.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem, because we shouldn't have to wait this long for a single sheet to process.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

    msa

this is typical with shaded views or views with shadows. Revit has to rasterize those so they take forever.

Yup... Ours take forever too. Plotting/PDFing 3D views with shadows is "AUGI time"

I suggest using medium quality when printing. In my experience, it's faster and remains adequate.

    Ok Thanks.

When you say it takes forever, your saying that one of your prints can take up to 1 hour to process...

It seems that the bigger the file size the longer it takes to process the print.

My files are relatively small at 10-15 MBytes and they take 5-10 minutes to rasterize for my plotter or large format printer. The issue is not with the device or DWF or PDF, but with the drivers and Revit's ability to write the printing code. To print or plot shading and shadows is tantamount to rendering the 3D view. Calculating all of the triangular wedges to represent the shaded and shadowed areas is a large task and the more complex the model, the greater number of model elements and the larger the model file requires enormous calculations on the part of the Revit rendering engine. So, just like rendering, adding shadows raises the bar on rasterization and the calculations necessary to print or plot, no matter the device you are outputting.

PDF processing time is one of the main cause of working overtime.
