Run, yes. Optimally, no. Laptops are designed for portability, which means sacrificing power and price. That gets even worse with more complex add-ons and verticals. The powerful ones you need to work well get hot, so you will need something to put it on, and the mouse as well (don't even think about using the touch pad for design work). Small, single monitor doesn't leave much room for UI, either.
Unless you are on the road most of the time, like a travelling sales rep who needs a specific demonstration set-up to show each client, a desktop is best for design work.
I don't think it's a question of wise or unwise.
It's more of a question of "do you need the portability"?
I'm run it on a Dell M70 - not because it's the fastest plotform, but because I travel between offices and need the portability.

I am running AutoCAD and Civil 3D on an HP 8710w Core 2 Duo T7500, 2GB RAM, Quadro FX1600 M. It costs about $2500.It runs AutoCAD better than my desktop (P4 3.6Ghz, 2GB, Quador 1500).
So the answer to your question is yes. AutoCAD runs just fine on a laptop but you'll just spend more money for the portability.
I have a Dell M1730 that I beefed up even more than the stock one and all I can say is... "WOW. is that thing fast"
but it wasnt cheap
