Default Easier way to add materials to surfaces

    Submitted By : Kevin Coble

Description : I would like AutoCAD Architecture to have the ability to add materials to objects by picking the material you want and clicking the surface of the object just like in Google Sketchup without using that stupid styles manager. It's ridiculous what you have to go through to add a material to surfaces on objects.

How Used : This would make adding materials much easier and eliminate the need for the styles manager to add materials and save a lot of time in doing 3d models.

    Release : AutoCAD 2008

Yeah, maybe they could make something like a materials palette that would pop up when you typed in "RMAT" where you could right click on a visual image of the material and then select something like "apply material" and then apply it directly to objects. It would be cute if they had a little paintbrush icon pop up too...

That's funny, I've tried all that before but the material is never applied to the object. Are we all doing something wrong O' Cad Genius?

While we're waiting for "Cad Genius" to comment, I figured I'd give an answer. The only reason I've seen it not work is if a render material definition is already assigned to the object/component to which you're trying to assign a material. In that case, you can use "edit object display" to assign the render material or use the display tab of the properties to change the material. That is one reason why I actually like the render material definition for "standard" material to be set to *None*. That way, you can assign whichever material you want to the various bits.

Personally, I find the style based material definitions to be The Way To Go. Love it. One material definition change and all of the stone veneer in the drawing changes bitmap. I can't imagine doing that on an object to object basis. I actually find the material definition aspect of ACA to be quite easy to work with, efficient and accessible in many different ways with varying degrees of global effect.

I wanted to add that you can also use the "Tool Catalog Generator" to create a palette of "material definitions" from any drawing. Once the palette is made, you can add it to your tool palette. You can then click on any material definition on the palette to execute the material definition tool. You will then be prompted to select any object. When you select an object it will pop up a menu of the current materials assigned to the object. Each material will have a pull down with the options to "leave as is", "style" (override), or "object override". Click which you want and you're done. It doesn't get any better than that, IMO.
