    Question Autocad vs Architectural Desktop

I used Autocad from version 2.6 thru version version 14 and retired. I have played with version 2002 some lately.
I need to get back into Autocad for some special projects I'm helping with on a volunteer basis.
I'm a little confused about the arrangement of the product line.
Does Architectural Desktop include Autocad? or is it an add-on.
    How about Autocad Civil 3D?

What is the best book (s) to buy to quickly bring me up to date on the new products.

    Thank you and God Bless,
    Scott

    Hi Scott. Welcome to Augi!
Everything you can do in Acad can be done exactly the same way in ACA (Arch Desktop).
ACA is built on top of Autocad. Civil 3d I think is the same way, but I've used it so I couldn't tell you for sure.
There's so much new stuff out there now that I can't tell you a book to go get to find out what's there. I'd suggest reading through the forums here, or take a look at Cadalyst.com. Cadalyst is about the only think I can think of that will get you up to speed on any new Cad Realated project from any vendor.
Is there one piece of software you'd like to know more about or get a book for? That I could help you out with.
Welcome back to the Cad world

    Thanks Dave,
I wasn't sure if I would have to buy both - I'm glad I only need Architectural Desktop. I have a book for "Mastering 2006 ADT" and it seems to be pretty thorough - guess I'll try to find one on 2008 (if that's the version Autodesk is publishing now.
Thanks again for your quick response.

Lots to learn. Be sure to check out data linking to Excel for 2008, Table commands, and data fields and dynamic blocks.

Civil 3D has AutoCAD as a base but it is for site plans and subdivisions, grading, drainage and roads.

Since 2009 is just around the corner, Paul Aubin will most likely be publishing his book again. His book genneraly only tends to get bigger. Since most of the concepts stay the same he dosen't always re-write every chapter. You may want to hold off on that for a bit an wait.
    Just a thought.
