    Default Boat lofting

    Hi,

I posted this on the Autodesk discussion group and got a couple answers related to surface modeling. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions based on solid modeling that they can relate.

I'm trying to figure out how to draw a boat based on loft dimensions. I've got it working fine thru parallel sections as you can see in the attached file however I cannot seem to get the stem form (perpendicular to all other sketches) to work into the loft. Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanks for the help,
    Greg

I just took a REALLY QUICK look at this, and really didn't try anything with it, but here's what I'm thinking of trying.

Create one half of the hull as a surface

Mirror the surface across a plane

    Add thickness to the surfaces

    Join and trim accordingly

Would something like that work for you?

    Did this ever get resolved?

I noticed that you had some mis-alignment. That is to say that the dimensions weren't quite matched up and the loft couldn't be completed because there was no suitable solution... the stem form sketch was about .5" too short and needed some form of connection upwards. I just extended the existing curve to an additional height to make it match up.

Here is what I got with about 2 minutes of fiddling...

I did not get this resolved yet as it's a side project for me that's gotten pushed back. The pic you posted looks exactly like what I want to end up with. Can you attach the modified .ipt file so I can see what changes you've made?

    Thanks for the help,
    Greg

    Check it out...

I added text to the STEM FORM and FORM 5 sketches to explain what was done.

You'll need to adjust the transition mapping on the loft to get it where you want, but beware that the shell command isn't friendly with your geometry (it's not great with lofting to start with)

From a design standpoint, you may want to work on that stem form anyway... the transition becomes flat on the ends rather than continuing with the curve... in both the top and side views. You could easily make that stem form sketch geometrically match both views with a few minutes work (I'd be glad to show you if interested). Add some rails (3D sketch) and it would look smashing!
