Default MEP beginner question: Mechanical "Layout Path" button

I've got lots of experience with Revit Architecture, but don't know diddly about the MEP-specific tools.

Working through the Mechanical tutorials, you select diffusers, create a supply air system, and add a VAV box to the system, at which point, at which point, the "Layout Path" button appears on the Option Bar.

The thing is, experimenting on my own, I always botch some minor thing -- usually an offset of something. I go back and correct it, but then I never see the "Layout Path" button again, even when I select the air supply system.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? This can't possibly be this hard to use.

I KNEW it had to be some simple mistake. I had inadvertantly switched to a Reflected Ceiling Plan instead of the Floor Plan, which, oddly, looks almost identical. It seems that you can only lay out paths in a floor plan.

Now that you know how to make it work, my suggestion is to forget you even know where the button is. So far, I have not found an auto-route selection that is even close to acceptable based on our office standard for air flow.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that is frustrated. The auto-routes make no sense at all. I don't want to just bash the product. I wish I get get some help. With piping snaping to anything in oddball directions, where do I start?
