    Hi

System variable VisRetain may help (sorry I don't fully understand your query).

Might also want to have a read of the following, comes from an old ACAD Guild thread -

    Subject: [ACAD] nested XREF

    Hello!

I use very much xref files. Is there a limit for the level of nested xref files?

For example xref1 is xrefed in xref2 which is xrefed in xref3 .... which is xrefed in xrefN.

How bigger can be this N?

    Thank you!

    Hi

I don't believe there is a limit (this is where someone proves me very wrong), but "you" want to be careful of *Circular* references as thay can cause problems and confusion... over using *Nested* Xrefs can also making working on drawings very difficult for others who don't fully appreciate/understand "your" logic behind it.

*Nested* Xrefs can be useful don't get me wrong but I personally think "you" have to be very careful when deciding to use them, again this is mainly for the benefit of others that may need to work on "your" drawings.

Personally I always go with *OverLay* where ever possible, helps keep things nice and simple for others (but mainly for myself).

    Have a good one, Mike
