I'm using vanilla 2007. Is there a way to lock the display on a polygonal viewport? When I select the viewport and go to properties, it shows that I have 2 entities selected and doesn't offer me all of the properties of the viewport to do this.

In the properties box hit the pulldown to filter for viewports. You should also be able to use the right-click context menu to access the viewport settings.
Thanks, but neither one of those worked because autocad simply doesn't give you that option w/ polygonal viewports through those methods. I have always locked my viewports through the properties dialog box, and with polygonal viewports only, autocad sees them differently than regular viewports and doesn't allow you to do that through properties. However I just realized that it can be done simply by right clicking on the viewport. Don't know why I didn't check this earlier.
Non-rectangular viewports are composed of the viewport object AND a closed polyline. They are "linked" together. When you select the "viewport", you are selecting both objects. That is why it shows 2 objects selected.
I have attached an animated GIF showing how to do it. Click the image below.
